2 girls shot at grade school playground on Far South Side

Two girls, one 13 and the other under 10, were shot in the playground of an elementary school Friday afternoon on the Far South Side, police and fire officials said.

The girls were taken in serious condition to Comer Children’s Hospital, and their injuries are not considered life-threatening, according to Larry Langford, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.

They were shot around 1:45 p.m. outside Warren Elementary School at 9239 S. Jeffery Ave., according police and fire officials.

Police said “persons of interest” were being questioned.

The highly rated school in the Calumet Heights community serves roughly 300 students, according to CPS.

Earlier, one person was killed and another was wounded in a shooting Friday afternoon on the South Side.

The shooting happened about 12:55 p.m. in the 8000 block of South Ellis Avenue in the East Chatham neighborhood, police said.

One person was dead on the scene and a second was treated by paramedics, according to police and fire officials.
