Listening to students’ views through the university’s online feedback mechanism is key

Breathtaking mountain scenery, beaches, fresh air and now stand-out teaching — Aberystwyth University has overhauled its offer to students after years of performing poorly in the league tables.

It has gone through a revolution in its teaching to create a virtual learning environment so students get the most out of their courses.

All lectures are recorded online and a new “tutor dashboard” enables teaching staff to monitor the progress of students. Work for assessment is submitted electronically and feedback is received promptly online.

Listening to students’ feedback has been crucial. Most universities carry out evaluations at the end of the year. However, Aberystwyth’s feedback takes place mid-semester, to have an immediate impact on the way that courses are taught.
