Preorders for the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus began early this morning, and it looks like many consumers are still debating whether to upgrade to the new models or hold out for the premium iPhone X, which is slated for a November release. With the Note 8 also hitting stores today and the Google Pixel still on deck for an official announcement, we polled The Verge’s staff to see why they are or are not looking to upgrade to the new iPhone, and whether Animoji, Face ID, and a bezel-less screen are enough to push them over for the more expensive device.
Will you be upgrading to the new iPhone?

I resigned myself to the high probability that I’d want the iPhone X when I bought into the iPhone Upgrade Plan last year, so I’m likely going to just follow through with that. Whether I wind up liking it as much as I’d hoped is a toss-up, especially because there’s (finally) a wealth of competition at the high end of the smartphone market again. But any time I try to switch to Android, I usually find myself being pulled by the gravity of iOS back to an iPhone. So here I am. Staring down a $1,000 phone.

The thing that matters most to me is a phone’s camera, and it still looks like Google’s Pixel is going to come out ahead of the iPhone. I’m planning to buy a phone in the next couple months, and if Apple can prove to me that it’s back on top for photography, then I’ll probably take a long look at the 8. The X, on the other hand, is just way too expensive.

I’ll be buying an 64GB iPhone 8 Plus in gold. Although I would love the chance to imitate a talking poop emoji with Face ID and enjoy the OLED edge-to-edge screen on the X, the 8 Plus has enough new features like wireless charging and True Tone display to satisfy me for the next year — at least until I somehow accidentally destroy this iPhone too.

I won’t be buying an iPhone X, even though it’d probably up my cool factor, because I don’t have $1,000. Oh, and I’d rather pay rent.

Currently, I have an iPhone 6 Plus, and it’s about the time to upgrade: my phone has been acting up lately. I’m sticking with the 8 Plus because I like the size, and I like what portrait mode does.
For me, it’s really the price point: $1,000 is a lot, even if I’m paying in installments through AT&T. I like having a physical home button (even though it isn’t really a physical button), and the huge things about the X and extra bit of processing power just doesn’t do it for me. I figure those changes will trickle down to the models for us mere peasants in the future anyway.

I’ve been an iPhone nut since the iPhone 3GS and have since had the 4, 5, and 6 Plus — the latter of which is my current phone. I’m pretty happy with my phone (apart from the fact it’s slowed down loads and the battery life is less than stellar). I don’t really want the 8 or 8 Plus because I feel like it’s not really worth the upgrade until my 6 Plus dies. I feel like they’re too similar physically and I want something more refreshing. Also I’m okay with using a phone that’s slightly outdated.
I’d love an OLED display, but can’t bring myself to embrace that notch on the iPhone X yet. I’m heavily embedded in Apple’s ecosystem (Mac, Apple Watch, etc etc), so although I really adore the Galaxy Note 8 (apart from that finger print sensor!) I’m kinda in a rut about my next handset, so for now am just sticking with what I’ve got.

I buy a new iPhone every year, the best one Apple offers. The iPhone X is the best phone Apple will release this year. Therefore I will buy it.

I am Team Android and have always been Team Android, even if Oreo is breaking my heart this year, so I will hold out until the new Google Pixel is announced before making decisions about my next smartphone upgrade. Even still, so far, it does not seem like there is anything compelling enough about the new iPhones that have convinced me to switch over to iOS.

I’ll probably be upgrading to something, since I’m on the iPhone Upgrade Program through Apple already. I do want to wait and see how the X does in reviews / hands on impressions before I make a decision, though.

“I’m actually exactly at the 2-year mark where I’m finally done paying off my 6S Plus, but the thought of having to restart this entire process if I were to buy a new phone is kind of upsetting. It has all sorts of wonky issues too, like shutting down randomly for no reason, but I might try to do a factory reset first before I get a new iPhone. That’s just like pretending I have a new phone, right? Also, having headphone jack is still a pretty big deal for me, and I want to hold onto it for as long as possible.
What about you? Have you put in a preorder for the iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, or are you waiting for the iPhone X? Or none of the above? Let us know in the comments!
