Binghamton University stabbing: Police identify dead freshman

Police have identified the University at Binghamton freshman who was stabbed to death on Sunday night as 19-year-old engineering student Joao Souza.

The identity of the victim comes after the university cancelled classes on Monday. New York State Police and university police are still searching for the suspect, who was described in a tweet from the school.

Investigators from multiple agencies interviewed people throughout the night, and determined the stabbing was not a random act.

The university offered counseling services to anyone who needs it by calling the Dean of Students Office at 607-777-2804.

“If there is information that relates to the immediate welfare of students and the campus community, we will communicate it via our alert system,” Binghamton University said in a news release.
