Binghamton University student confirmed dead after stabbing

Police in Binghamton are looking for the suspect responsible for the death of a Binghamton University student due to a stabbing.

Authorities said it happened around 10:30 p.m. Sunday at Windham Hall on Binghamton’s campus.

Binghamton University said in a tweet that one of their students had died from a stabbing.

Police said the victim was 19-year-old engineering student Joao Souza.

Investigators from multiple agencies said they interviewed numerous people throughout the night. They have also reported that this does not appear to be a random act.

Police said the suspect is described as a light-skinned man wearing dark pants and a dark Puma hooded sweatshirt.

The campus will is currently offering support and counseling services for students and faculty. University officials said all classes on Monday are also canceled.

This is the second violent death the university has seen in the last month-and-a-half. The body of another Haley Anderson of Westbury, was found on March 9 in the off-campus apartment of a fellow student she had briefly dated. She had been strangled. The Broome County district attorney’s office is seeking to have that suspect returned from Nicaragua to stand trial.
