Miles Bridges had 15 points, seven assists, six rebounds and two blocks to help No. 1 Michigan State turn a closely contested game into another rout, pulling away to beat Maryland 91-61 on Thursday night.
The Spartans (15-1, 3-0 Big Ten) went on a 15-0 run late in the first half to take control and led 44-32 at halftime. They refused to be content with the 12-point lead, building 30-plus point cushions in the second half by diving for loose balls, playing tough defense and finishing with a season-high 16 3-pointers.
Freshman Jaren Jackson had 15 points, three blocks and two steals for the Spartans despite playing just 4 minutes in the first half because he had two fouls. Nick Ward had 16 points and two blocks. Cassius Winston had 10 points and eight assists before fouling out.
The Terrapins (13-4, 2-2) had won seven straight. Maryland’s Anthony Cowman scored 26 and Kevin Huerter had 16 points.
SIUE beats Eastern Kentucky • Jalen Henry scored a career-high 35 points on 13-of-18 shooting and SIU Edwardsville ended a three-game skid and beat Eastern Kentucky 85-82 in Richmond, Ky.
Henry was 5 of 6 from 3-point range but 2 of 4 from the foul line in the final 25 seconds and kept Eastern Kentucky’s chances alive. Dillon Avare made a jumper with five seconds left and Eastern Kentucky trailed 84-82. Christian Ellis made 1 of 2 free throws to push the lead to three and Nick Mayo’s 3-point heave at the buzzer was off the mark.
Christian Ellis and Daniel Kinchen each scored 12 points for the Cougars (5-9, 1-2 Ohio Valley Conference). Eastern Kentucky is 6-10, 0-3.
Bears stay spotless in MVC • Alize Johnson grabbed 20 rebounds to go along with his 24 points in a 62-55 win over Northern Iowa in Springfield, Mo. Johnson has two of the nation’s five 20-20 games this season.
Tywhon Pickford led UNI with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Missouri State (13-3, 3-0 MVC) led by 19 late in the second half before Northern Iowa (8-7, 0-3) tightened the final score with a late run.
Murray State rolls past SEMO • Jonathan Stark scored 36 points to lead Murray State to an 89-73 home win over Southeast Missouri State. Stark was 14-for-14 from the free throw line for the Racers (11-3, 3-0 OVC), part of a streak of 39 straight makes from the line to set a school record.
Freshman Ledarrius Brewer scored 19 to lead SEMO (7-9, 1-2).
MU falls to Louisiana State • Without star Sophie Cunningham, No. 15 Missouri saw its 13 game-winning streak end with a 69-65 loss to Louisiana State at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers (13-2, 1-1 SEC) rallied to within two in the final seconds but turned the ball over before getting a chance to set up their next possession. With Cunningham nursing a strained right knee, sophomore guard Amber Smith scored a career-high 27 points.
LSU (10-3, 2-0) led by as many as 15 in the first half and held on to win its eighth straight.
Jordan Frericks added 19 points and 15 rebounds for Missouri. Cunningham is considered day to day. (Dave Matter)
