Drake remained undefeated in Missouri Valley Conference play with a 3-0 win over the Illinois State softball team on Sunday at Marian Kneer Stadium.
The Bulldogs scored two runs in the second inning off losing pitcher Shannon Felde (0-6) and added another in the fifth to improve to 18-0 in the Valley and 35-9 overall.
ISU received two of its five hits from Riley Hale in falling to 18-27 overall and 9-9 in the MVC.
Softball sweeps at North Central: The IWU softball team received home runs from the first three batters in the lineup en route to a 9-3 win over North Central and a sweep of a key College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader at Naperville.
The Titans also claimed the opener, 8-1, to improve to 21-8 overall and 11-1 in conference play. North Central fell to 23-5, 7-3.
Jillian Runyon, Sydney Alery and Sam Berghoff all homered in the nightcap. Alery had four RBIs in game two after also belting a homer in the opener.
Berghoff was 4-for-4 in the opening game and had four RBIs. Runyon, the leadoff hitter, was 5-of-9 for the day.
Brea Walker limited North Central to five hits in game one to grab her sixth pitching win of the year against three losses. Ally Wiegand improved to 10-2 in the circle after shutting out North Central over 4⅓ innings in relief of Mackenzie Marquis in the nightcap.
Wuethrich, men’s golf take tourney win: IWU’s Rob Wuethrich shot a blistering two-day total of 5-under 138 to grab medalist honors as the IWU men’s golf team captured the Take Back the Night Challenge at South Side Country Club in Decatur.
Wuethrich outdistanced Kristian Kristensen of Parkland College by five shots to take the individual title.
As a team, the Titans shot a 3-over 575 to edge the IWU “B” team by two strokes with Parkland finishing third.
Michael Holtz, Skylar Le Vine and Drew Pershing all tied for third at 144 to pace the IWU “B” team.
Baseball falls at Augustana: Gino Cavalieri doubled and drove home two runs, but the IWU baseball team dropped a 7-4 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin decision to Augustana at Moline.
Augustana touched four IWU pitchers for six runs in the third inning, saddling starter Quinn Gudaitis (2-1) with the loss.
Jake Stewart, Cavalieri and Mike Plecki each had two hits for the Titans (18-12, 9-8).
Hawks drop two: The Heartland softball team was swept by Danville Area Community College (DACC) in a doubleheader at Danville.
DACC won the opener 5-2 before completing the sweep with a 3-1 win in the nightcap.
