Athens, WV – As part of America Saves Week, scheduled for February 26 – March 3, 2018, Concord University is spreading the saving message with activities for the campus community and general public.
Organizers hope to encourage people to save more successfully and encourage more successfully and encourage more people to save. The week long observance promotes making savings automatic to help people reach their savings goals.
“Concord takes a holistic approach to wellness. We want our students, faculty, and staff to be physically, mentally and fiscally fit, not just now, but for our entire lives,” states Dr. Marjie Flanigan, Vice President of Student Affairs & Dean of Students.
“Joining as a partner with America Saves Week is one way to focus on the importance of budgeting and saving,” she said. “The personal savings rate in the United States is at an unfortunate low, something we hope to change, at least for our Concord community.”
“This is our first year of partnering with America Saves Week and we hope to add to the activities each year. We’re proud to be the first West Virginia college or university in 2018 to join this important effort,” she said.
America Saves Week activities at Concord include a Piggy Bank Savings Giveaway on Monday, February 26, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Ground Floor of the Jerry & Jean Beasley Student Center. Participants may designate either the CU GAP Fund or the CU Annual Campaign to receive the money collected. The Piggy Bank Savings will be turned in on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 with a chance to win prizes.
The VITA program will provide free income tax preparation to qualifying individuals on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Rahall GRIP Center. To schedule an appointment call Bonnie Brown at (304) 384-5244.
From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on February 27, 2018, a representative from First Community Bank will be available in the Rahall GRIP Center to discuss financial strategies and answer questions.
A brown bag lunch workshop on Budgeting, Saving & Investing will be presented on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 by Concord Assistant Professor of Management Ms. Angela Addair and Professor of Finance Dr. Muhammad Islam. The presentation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in Conference Room AB on the third floor of the Jerry & Jean Beasley Student Center.
A Savings Blast is scheduled for Thursday, March 1 offering tips to becoming an active saver.
