Corban softball player turns life around
SALEM, Ore. — Corban University’s softball team finished the season by getting to the NAIA National Championship game.
The Warriors dropped the championship game to Oklahoma City University. While it was a great run for the team it marked an amazing comeback for one player. Pitcher Allie Mendez overcame a decade of substance abuse to make her mark on the program.
Mendez was introduced to drugs and alcohol when she was 14. She stopped playing softball and stopped going to school.
“I didn’t see a way out,” Mendez said.
She did find a way got help and ended up at Corban. She’s working to earn her psychology degree and hopes to work with at-risk youth.
