The suspect accused of a stabbing on the Binghamton University campus over the weekend was taken into custody Monday night.
It happened Sunday night, when Joao Souza,19, a freshman engineering student was stabbed, police say. According to University officials, investigators believe Souza was targeted.
The suspect has been identified as Michael M. Roque, 20. According to the Broome County District Attorney’s office, Roque is charged with 2nd degree murder. Court documents say he stabbed Souza multiple times on campus, inside Windham Hall. Roque’s public defender entered a not guilty plea. Officials say the suspect will be back in Vestal Town Court, but no word on an exact date.
In an alert on the university’s website, school officials say there was no threat to students.
