Area graduating high school students and their parents can get free help filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form during College Goal Sunday events at 2 p.m. Feb. 25 in Fort Wayne, Warsaw and Goshen.

Locally, college financial aid professionals will provide help at Ivy Tech Community College-Fort Wayne’s Coliseum campus, 3800 N. Anthony Blvd. People will be able to fill out the FAFSA online, and a Spanish language interpreter will be available to assist people.

College Goal Sunday events will take place at Ivy Tech’s campus in Warsaw and in the student union at Goshen College in Goshen.

At all College Goal Sunday events, volunteers will walk students and parents through filling out the form, an event news release said.

Students must fill out the FAFSA form to be considered for federal and state grants, scholarships and student loans at most colleges, universities and vocational/technical schools nationwide, the news release said. Students must file the FAFSA by April 15 to be eligible for Indiana financial aid.

WHAT TO BRING

• Your family’s U.S. Department of Education Federal Student Aid (FSA) IDs, which you are encouraged to apply for at https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm before coming to College Goal Sunday

• Your parents or guardian

• Your parents’ completed 2016 IRS 1040 tax returns, W-2 Forms and other 2016 income and benefits information.

• Your income information if you worked during 2017

• If you are age 24 or older, you can attend alone; bring your completed 2016 IRS 1040 tax return, W-2 Form or other 2016 income and benefits information.

OTHER INFORMATION

• Students who fill out their FAFSA at College Goal Sunday will be entered in drawing to receive one of five $1,000 college scholarships given out statewide. The winners will be notified in April, and prizes will be sent directly to the college the student plans to attend, the news release said.

• Students who are 21st Century Scholars must submit a FAFSA form on time to fulfill their pledge to graduate from high school, meet grade point requirements, fulfill a pledge of good citizenship, and apply for college financial aid, the news release said. Scholars who have met the program’s requirements will receive state funds to help cover their college tuition and fees for eight semesters at eligible Indiana colleges.
