GOP and Dem gov debates set for University of Alabama

Democratic and Republican debates have been scheduled for next week on the campus of the University of Alabama.

While the leading candidates in the Democratic debate will be attending, the GOP debate will take place without Gov. Kay Ivey, who has already skipped two other debates leading up to the June 5 primary.

The American Legion Alabama Boys State will be holding the debates.

The GOP debate will take place on May 29, followed by the Democratic debate on May 30. Both debates will be at the Morgan Hall auditorium on the UA campus in Tuscaloosa.

According to an announcement from Alabama Boys State, GOP candidates Tommy Battle, Scott Dawson and Bill Hightower have confirmed they will attend.

On the Democratic side, Sue Bell Cobb, Christopher Countryman, James Fields and Walt Maddox have accepted invitations. Doug “New Blue” Smith and Anthony White are not listed among those planning to attend.

Panelists for both debates are Joey Kennedy, Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial writer for The Birmingham News who writes for B-Metro Magazine & Alabama Political Reporter,  Tom Gordon, former writer for The Birmingham News and The Anniston Star, writer and editor with B-Metro Magazine and Birmingham Watch and Reshad Hudson, WIAT CBS 42 and Nexstar Montgomery Reporter.

Art Franklin, Emmy award-winning anchor for WIAT-TV CBS 42 in Birmingham, will be the debates moderator.

WIAT, Birmingham; WKRG, Mobile; WDHN, Dothan; WZDX, Huntsville; WRBL, Columbus, Ga. will live stream both debates at 7:00 pm each day. Alabama Boys State will live stream on Facebook and Twitter and will put debates on You Tube.
