A Long Island high school football player died after being injured in practice Thursday morning, Suffolk County cops said.
The player — an 11th-grader at Sachem High School East in Farmingville — was hurt during off season practice about 8:40 a.m.
He was rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he died, officials said.
WNBC reported he may have slipped and hit his head on a pole during a drill where players carry the pole on their shoulders.
“Beyond saddened for friends, family, and teammates of Sachem East football,” Eric Brust posted on twitter. “Prayers are with you guys.”
Justin Cirillo wrote, “My sympathies are with the Sachem East football team and everyone involved with @SachemSchools. This is a sad day for Arrows everywhere.”
A spokeswoman for the Sachem Central Schools District had no immediate comment.
