Marvel rolled out the titles to their impending Marvel Legacy relaunch yesterday and while most of the series were continuations of the titles now, one fiery cover stood out in particular.
Johnny Blaze is coming back to the Marvel
When the House of Ideas revives the classic Spirits of Vengeance series this Fall, it’ll be featuring a crew of fan-favorites including the Johnny Blaze incarnation of Ghost Rider alongside Blade, Daimon Hellstrom, and Satana.
Fitting in with the theme of the new Marvel Legacy covers paying homage to classic comic runs, the first Spirits of Vengeance cover is a swipe of Giant X-Men #1 (1975). Written by Len Wein with art by Dave Cockrum, Giant-Size X-Men #1 features the first appearance of mutant favorites Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Thunderbird, making it a grail for many comic book collectors.
Although Ken Lashley was announced as the artist of cover for the initial Spirits of Vengeance issue, a creative team has yet to be unveiled for the series.
Bringing back characters like Johnny Blaze is a move that certainly falls in line with the promise the House of Ideas made about being able to please both old school collectors and new readers alike with their Marvel Legacy books.
A more recent version of the character — Robbie Reyes — debuted in 2013 and drove a flaming car instead of Ghost Rider’s iconic motorcycle. The Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider is the one that’s part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having been played by actor Gabriel Luna in this past season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
