Lamar University Athletic Director resigns, interim named

UPDATE: Lamar University announced Norman Bellard as the school’s interim athletic director.

“Norman Bellard’s involvement with Lamar University, as a student-athlete, distinguished alumnus, Cardinals fan, and as a long-standing member of our staff, makes him uniquely qualified to serve as interim Athletic Director,” Lamar University President Ken Evans said in a press release. “We look forward to his leadership and vision as we move forward at this moment of unprecedented opportunities for Lamar University Athletics.”

The school also announced “a full national search will begin immediately for a permanent athletic director.”

ORIGINAL STORY: Athletic Director Jason Henderson on Monday resigned from his position, according to Lamar media relations.

Henderson was in his 11th year overall with Lamar athletics. He first joined the staff as a compliance coordinator in 2006. He spent a year as interim athletic director in 2011 before officially being named to the position in June of 2012.

Prior to coming to Lamar, Henderson served as the athletic coordinator at Texas A&M-Kingsville, maintaining data on student-athletes.
