LIVERMORE — The president of Las Positas College, Barry A. Russell, announced his retirement Monday.
Russell began his tenure as president five years ago after serving as vice chancellor of academic affairs at the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office in Sacramento.
As part of his statewide role, he worked on academic planning, academic support programs, program approval and the review of degrees and certificates.
Before Sacramento, Russell was the vice president of instruction at the College of the Siskiyous in Weed, the dean of fine arts and communication at Cerritos College and dean of Southwestern College in Chula Vista.
He earned his doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin in 1991 and has dual degrees from Texas A&M University in music and commerce.
“I am delighted to say that I am proud of the work we have accomplished and the goals we have achieved at the college,” he said in a statement. “The coordinated efforts of the faculty, staff, and administration have made a significant difference for all involved with the college.”
Roanna Bennie is serving as Las Positas College’s interim president until further notice.
