EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) — An area hospital hosted a long-running event to celebrate cancer survivors.
Sunday afternoon, the HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital hosted its 23rd annual summer social event to celebrate cancer survivors from the hospital and the surrounding area. Along with friends and family, cancer survivors came together to enjoy a Hawaiian-themed luau. Those who attended were treated to a gourmet meal provided by the hospital. They spent time talking about their journeys fighting cancer.
“The cancer journey doesn’t stop when you stop treatment; patients carry that with them for the rest of their life,” says Georgia Smith, the executive director of cancer care services for HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital. “And sometimes it’s nice to just come back to an event like this and talk to other people that have walked that journey and be able to recharge your batteries a little bit and say I’m not just a cancer victim, but I am a cancer survivor.”
This week is cancer survivor week so Smith says that if you know someone that has either had cancer or has cancer to reach out to let them know you support them.
