Man burglarized University City homes with unlocked windows, police say | Law and order

UNIVERSITY CITY • A man who police say burglarized several homes here was arrested and charged Wednesday.

Maurice Washington, 28, is facing four counts of first-degree burglary and two counts of stealing. Police say he burglarized homes by climbing through unlocked rear windows.

Washington, who police say used to live in University City, was arrested early Wednesday by officers responding to a call about a burglary in progress in the 7400 block of Drexel Drive shortly after 2 a.m.

Arriving officers were told a suspect, later identified as Washington, had entered several homes in the area through their backyards and unlocked rear windows, police said. The suspect had removed the screens on the windows in each of the houses in order to gain entry.

Officers searching the area for the suspect found and arrested Washington without incident, police said.

Detectives believe Washington has burglarized other homes in the area in the past by finding houses without alarms and with unlocked windows.

He was charged Wednesday in connection with burglaries in the 7400 block of Drexel, one in the 7400 block of Ahern Avenue, and another in the 1000 block of Wilson Avenue. The three blocks are near each other.

Washington was being held Wednesday with bail set at $50,000.

Authorities ask anyone who believes their house was burglarized to call the University City Police Department at 314-725-2211 Ext. 8010 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477.
