Melania Trump harvests and plants in White House Garden

Melania Trump, accompanied by children from the local Girls and Boys Club, went to the White House Garden to do some planting and harvesting.

They braved the early fall heat on the South Lawn Friday amid the vegetable plantings made famous by Mrs. Trump’s predecessor, Michelle Obama.

The first lady’s office said that the group, with the National Park Service (NPS), talked about the outdoors and healthy eating, and NPS gave them a tutorial on how to harvest and plant, and a history of the garden and the White House beehive. Mrs. Trump also spoke with the children about their own gardens and the vegetables they like.

First Lady Melania Trump spent quality time today with several children from the Girls and Boys Club of Greater Washington, FBR Clubhouse in Ward 8.  The children’s ages ranged from 10 to 11 years old.  Along with the National Park Service (NPS), which maintains the White House grounds, the group spent time in the White House Kitchen Garden learning about the importance of the outdoors and healthy eating.  After a tutorial from the NPS on how to harvest and plant, as well as history on the Kitchen Garden and the White House beehive, the First Lady spoke with the children about their own gardens at home and the vegetables they like.  

Mrs. Trump’s office said earlier the group would harvest arugula, peas, radishes and Swiss chard and planting cabbage, cauliflower, turnips, carrots, kale, spinach and lettuce.

This was Mrs. Trump’s first event in the 2,800 square-foot garden that Mrs. Obama had made a key part of her “Let’s Move!” campaign to fight childhood obesity and promote healthy eating. The former first lady said last year she hoped the garden would symbolize a healthier nation and that future first families would also cherish it.

Mrs. Obama planted the garden in 2009, and the garden has yielded hundreds of pounds of fruit and vegetables every year. Some of the harvest fed the Obamas and White House guests, while other vegetables and herbs were given to local food kitchens.
