TAIPEI – The Purdue men’s basketball team will represent Team USA as the National Team in the World University Games and will open pool play against Argentina on Aug. 20, the International University Sports Federation (FISU) announced today.
It marks the beginning of a busy stretch for Team USA as it will play its five Pool C games in a span of six games. The USA National Team will begin its tournament by facing Argentina on August 20, tipping at 5:30 a.m. ET from Taipei Arena, an extremely-modern facility that sits 15,000 people. Taipei is 12 hours behind Eastern time in addition to crossing the International Date Line.
On Monday, August 21, the squad will face the United Arab Emirates at 3 a.m. ET, from the University of Taiwan Gymnasium (capacity 4,800). The contest with United Arab Emirates will be the only pool play contest that Team USA will play not in Taipei Arena.
After a day off, Team USA will return to the court for an August 23, tilt against the Czech Republic, beginning at 5:30 a.m. ET.
Team USA will close out pool play August 24 against Romania at 3 a.m. ET, and August 25, against Estonia at 12:30 a.m. ET.
The top two teams from each pool will then advance to the medal round, beginning with the quarterfinals on Sunday, August 27. The semifinals will take place August 28, and the finals will be held August 29, tipping at 8 a.m. ET.
Teams who finish third and fourth in their respective pool will participate in a consolation bracket, while the remaining teams that finish fifth and sixth in their pool will play in a third bracket. Each team is guaranteed to play at least eight games throughout the entire World University Games.
In preparation for the World University Games, the USA National Team will host two exhibition games against teams to be determined prior to leaving for Chinese Taipei.
