Saturday’s Maine women’s college roundup: Southern Maine wins at buzzer

GORHAM — Kristen Curley scored 35 points, including a jumper at the buzzer, as the University of Southern Maine women’s basketball team beat Western Connecticut 79-77 on Saturday.

Southern Maine (9-8, 6-1 Little East Conference) took a 77-74 lead after a free throw from Chantel Eells with less than 30 second left, but Kaitlyn Labonte tied the game for Western Connecticut (10-8, 3-4) with a 3-pointer with 14 seconds to go.

After a Huskie timeout, Eells missed a layup but Miranda Nicely grabbed the offensive rebound and found Curley for the winning basket as time expired.

SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 65, BERKELEY (N.Y.) 51: Alicia Ruth and Amanda Brett each scored 20 points and the Seawolves (14-5, 9-2 YSCC) beat the Knights (4-7) in South Portland.

Ruth hit six 3-pointers and Brett added 15 rebounds. Jordan Farquharson added 10 points.

ST. JOSEPH’S 81, ANNA MARIA 40: Julia Champagne scored 18 points, Emily Benway had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and the Monks (15-1, 8-0 GNAC) rolled past the Amcats (1-14, 0-6) in Standish.

Hannah Marks added 12 points and Kelsi McNamara added 11 points, seven assists and two steals for the Monks.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 66, ENDICOTT 63: Olivia Shaw had 18 points and 11 rebounds, Ashley Coneys added 17 and the Nor’easters (12-3, 8-1 CCC) held on to beat the Seagulls (8-8, 6-4) at Harold Alfond Forum in Biddeford.

Sam MacDonald added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Nor’easters, who took a 48-38 lead going into the fourth.

BOWDOIN 74, COLBY 33: Abby Kelly scored all 17 of her points in the first half to help the Polar Bears (17-0, 4-0 NESCAC) to a 34-13 lead on their way to a win over the Mules (7-8, 1-3) in Waterville.

Kate Kerrigan added 13 points and Taylor Choate added 12 for Bowdoin.

TUFTS 67, BATES 28: Jac Knapp scored 17 points and Melissa Baptista added 13 points and 11 rebounds off the bench to lead the Jumbos (16-2, 4-1 NESCAC) past the Bobcats (7-12, 1-4) in Lewiston.

Nina Davenport scored 18 for Bates.

HOCKEY

AMHERST 4, COLBY 2: Jamie McNamara and Katie Savage each scored in the first 2:20 of the game as the Mammoths (9-5-2, 5-3-2 NESCAC) beat the Mules (4-7-4, 1-5-4) in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Jocelyn Hunyadi and Brenna Sullivan each added goals for Amherst, which led 3-1 after the first.

Cassidy Holzer and Mikayla McLaughlin each scored for Colby.

MERRIMACK 4, MAINE 2: Katelyn Rae scored four goals, including the go-ahead goal 13:49 into the second period as the Warriors (9-15-3, 4-11-2 Hockey East) beat the Black Bears (16-7-3, 10-4-2) in Orono.

Lydia Murray and Cailey Hutchison scored for the Black Bears.

MIDDLEBURY 3, BOWDOIN 0: Maddie Winslow scored 1:26 into the first and the Panthers (10-3-1, 6-1-1 NESCAC) beat the Polar Bears (7-6-1, 1-6-1) in Middlebury, Vermont.

Elizabeth Wulf and Jenna Marotta each added goals for Middlebury.

Kerri St. Denis had 16 saves for the Polar Bears.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 3, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Kyra Yu and Tatum Gietl scored in the first period as the Nor’easters (7-6-6, 2-2-4 NEHC) beat the Huskies (6-12-1, 2-5-1 NEHC) in Biddeford.

Jessie Scott added a third-period goal for UNE. Scott, Kierra Wright, Julianne Sheehan and Yu each had an assist.

Brittany Evangelista had 44 saves for Southern Maine, while Caty Flagg had nine for UNE.
