A suspect is dead and an unarmed security officer sustained “very serious” injuries after they were shot at the psychiatric emergency services wing of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, according to Cincinnati Police Chief Eliot Isaac.
The suspect, who has not been identified, either entered or attempted to enter the wing when they started to fire shots, Isaac said during a press conference Wednesday.. The security officer was shot and was taken into surgery with injuries described as “very serious.”
The shooter fired additional shots, including at least one in the direction of a Cincinnati police officer responding to the call, Isaac said. The officer was not hit and did not return fire.
The shooter then turned the gun on themselves and was pronounced dead from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound, investigators said.
The injured security officer was unarmed and is not affiliated with the University of Cincinnati Police nor the Cincinnati Police Department, Isaac said.
The UC Medical Center entrance where the shooting occurred had metal detectors, police said, and might have played a role in uncovering the suspect was armed as they entered the building.

A University of Cincinnati Hospital security officer was shot at the psychiatric emergency services wing of the hospital, according to police officials and our news partner WCPO-TV.
The suspect shot themselves after shooting the officer, according to the station.
The officer suffered non-life threatening injuries. It was not known how severe the suspect’s injuries were.

A police officer has reportedly been shot near a University of Cincinnati hospital building, according to our news partners at WCPO-TV in Cincinnati.
The shooting was reported in the 3200 block of Burnet Avenue around 2 p.m. the station reports.
The officer’s injuries do not appear to be life threatening, according to a Cincinnati Police Department spokesman. The spokesman could not confirm what jurisdiction the officer worked for, WCPO-TV reports.
Police responded to reports of an active shooter near the University of Cincinnati Business Center, according to a tweet from UC Health. The shooter has reportedly suffered a gunshot wound, but it was unknown if they were shot by police or if the wound was self-inflicted.
