Sexual assault on College of Charleston campus investigated by State Law Enforcement Division | News

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the sexual assault of a woman at her College of Charleston residence hall.

The assault occurred around 2 a.m. Friday at a dormitory on St. Philip Street north of Calhoun Street, according to the college’s Department of Public Safety. The victim was in her room and heard a knock on the door. After she opened it, the suspect forced himself inside and sexually assaulted her.

The perpetrator is described as a white male between 18 and 20 years of age and 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10 with brown hair and a medium build.

In an email to the campus community, College of Charleston Police Chief Robert Reese said SLED is cooperating with campus and city police, and “is aggressively working to identify and apprehend a suspect.”

In the meantime, Reese said, the college has increased on-campus security in and around residence halls.

Anyone with information about the assault can submit an anonymous tip to campus police at 843-953-4998 or contact SLED at 803-896-7133.
