Each year, UC Davis’ University Airport — yes, UCD has an airport! — opens its hangars so the public can see interesting airplanes, antique vehicles, RC aircraft and talk to pilots and get a peek at aeronautical research.
The Friends of the University Airport and UCD Transportation and Parking Services are hosting the 15th annual open house between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28. Admission is free. Food and soft drinks will be available.
Among the highlights of the open house will be pilots and flight instructors on hand, happy to discuss flying. Young adults will enjoy learning about the range of potential careers in the field of aviation from professional pilots. Visitors can sign up for a drawing to win a free introductory flying lesson, too.
Also, stop by retired NASA astronaut and UCD professor Steve Robinson’s hangar/laboratory, which will be open and displaying student research.
University Airport is readily accessible by car or bike. From Russell Boulevard, turn south on La Rue Road, then right on Hutchison Drive, then left at Hopkins Road and again onto Airport Road. Signs will guide visitors toward free parking.
