Trading in The Crown for the laptop, Claire Foy is the new Lisbeth Salander.
The search is over. Sony Pictures’ Millennium franchise will commence production in January and The Girl in the Spider’s Web will be released on Oct. 19, 2018.
The film will be directed by Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez. In a statement given about the casting Alvarez said, “I couldn’t be more thrilled about Claire taking the reins of the iconic Lisbeth Salander,” he said. “Claire is an incredible, rare talent who will inject a new and exciting life into Lisbeth. I can’t wait to bring this new story to a worldwide audience, with Claire Foy at its center.”
This could be the beginning of a very big weekend for Foy. She is nominated for an Emmy for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in the hit Netflix series, The Crown. It has been a role that has brought her numerous awards already and now she will be taking on the iconic role of Lisbeth Salander.
The journey to her casting has been an interesting one, to say the least. The character Lisbeth Salander comes the Millennium series of books by Stieg Larsson, most notably The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That title has been adapted twice, once in its native Swedish language with Noomi Rapace as Salander and once in English with Rooney Mara as Salander. Instead of adapting the two other books in the series written by Stieg Larsson, Sony has decided to adopt the fourth novel in the series that has never been put on film, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, which was the beginning of a new trilogy written by David Lagercrantz. Perhaps the idea just continues with this new trilogy seeing as The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye was just released this week.
Nevertheless, the role of Lisbeth Salander is ripe with opportunity for an actress and Claire Foy will now get her attempt at making the role in her own image. The Girl in the Spider’s Web is scheduled for Oct. 19, 2018.
