Creighton’s current trauma center handles 63 percent of Omaha’s penetrating trauma, such as gunshot and stab wounds. Now, the trauma unit will move twelve minutes south.
“We’ve been here for 30 years and so a lot of people are used to coming here for care,” said Dr. Devin Fox, with Creighton University Medical Center.
The Medical Center will officially shut down at 7 a.m. Friday. At the same time, two new medical centers will open. It’s a lights off, lights on procedure.
“It’s about six blocks to the university campus, about nine miles to Bergan,” officials said.
Creighton’s trauma center is moving into Bergan Mercy’s emergency department, just north of 72nd and Center streets. To ease fears about the increase in distance, a new free-standing emergency room will open at 24th and Cuming streets.
Doctors there will be able to stabilize a patient before moving them to Bergan.
“All the providers that staff the level one trauma center at Creighton University Bergan are the ones who also rotate down to this campus, so it’s the same providers, providing the same level of care, the same level of expertise and the same level of experience,” Fox said.
Bergan Campus’ trauma center will be able to handle critical injuries, including crash victims and gunshot wounds. The new university clinic won’t have a trauma operating suite. It will have family medicine, social services and a pharmacy.
“With just two days to go and just a handful of patients left, I think we’ll be able to see to the completion of this effort pretty safely and successfully,” Fox said.
The campus at 30th and California is accepting trauma patients until 7 a.m. Friday. After that, they’re putting up fences and signage, directing people where to go.
