HAMMOND, La. (WWL) – The two people wounded in a shooting on the Southeastern University campus are student-athletes, according to university officials.
Both of the victims received non-life-threatening wounds and were treated at a nearby hospital.
Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the double shooting. Officials did not identify the suspects or their connection to the university but said they will both be booked with attempted murder.
Schools officials say the shooting stemmed from an argument that began off campus, then carried over to the parking lot between student housing and the university center around 3 a.m. Friday.
School leaders maintain that this is an isolated incident and there is no imminent threat to the campus. The school’s alert system sent out updates to students, staff, and faculty through email, text and social media.
Officials say they’re proud of the way the school responded to the shooting.
“I think that’s one of the things we take very seriously, safety at Southeastern and being able to share information,” Executive Director of Public Affairs, Erin Cowser, said.
School officials confirmed that there has not been an incident like this in the past ten years, but they could also not recall ever having a shooting on campus in the school’s history.
