Welcome to Palomar College – Pomerado News

THUMBS UP to the Palomar Community College District for the opening (at last) of the Rancho Bernardo Education Center. The college purchased an unused, four-story office building and parking garage and has spent more than a year getting it ready for use by up to 2,000 full-time equivalent students, 38 fulltime faculty members and a staff of 37 staff and administrators. Classes begin June 11. College officials say many of the classes to be offered, including science, technology, engineering, arts and math, will be in line with the employment needs of surrounding business.

THUMBS DOWN to the tactics being used by some of people hired to collect signatures on an initiative to place on the November ballot a proposal to rezone 7-plus acres on Metate Lane so a developer can build up to 50 homes on the property. They can be found in shopping centers and are going door-to-door, saying just about anything in order to collect a few dollars per signature. We’re not commenting on whether the proposed rezoning is a good or bad idea. However, it is clear these signature gatherers are not being entirely truthful about the purpose of the petition. We suggest is that voters take the time to read its wording before deciding whether to sign it.

THUMBS UP regarding the creation of United North County Inland, a nonprofit organization that intends to combine regional resources to address community needs. The new group originated through The Church at Rancho Bernardo, but combines the efforts of those in the region’s business and faith communities. First on its list will be the feeding of low-income children when they are not in school. A team of 15 community leaders has been formed to lead a food distribution program that will start in the fall.

THUMBS UP to Poway High School graduate Jackie Foster, who is a semi-finalist in the NBC show “The Voice.” Raised in Poway, where her parents still live, Foster is now based in Boston. She is a former Miss Poway and was a winner of the Poway Rodeo’s “So You Think You Can Sing” and the “RB Idol” contests. Although Foster was eliminated Tuesday night, Poway received a lot of love on the show via videos showing her “#JackPack” fans both in the studio and back home.
